Frequently asked questions

Answers to frequently asked questions. We understand that you have many questions when learning to play golf. With the answers to these frequently asked questions, we hope to get you started.

1. Can I hit balls on your driving range without golf experience?

Yes, you can. You do not have to be a member to use the driving range. Use of the driving range is free, but you have to pay for the balls. You can pay contactless at the ball machine (or insert €1 coins).

2. Do I have to be a member of your golf club to take lessons?

No, that is not required. You can take a clinic or lessons without club membership, for example the Golfstart starter course which you can read more about via the link.

3. When can I play on a golf course?

You need course permission when you prove that you know the golf rules and have mastered the basic techniques. You are then qualified to play on that golf course. You can obtain your course permission via a Golfstart lesson package. For our par-3 Broekbosbaan you do not need this course permission, and you can also use this course to practice between lessons(see the rates). Do try to pass your rules exam as soon as possible, for respect, safety and speed in the course. You can do that via the Golf.nl app or website.

4. When may I play on all courses in the Netherlands?

You need a handicap-54-registration (the former GVB) when you prove that you know the golf rules - and other rules about safety, for example - and that you have mastered the basic technique. When you have your handicap-54 registration, you can play on almost any qualified golf course in the Netherlands.

5. What do I need to do to get a handicap 54 registration (the former GVB)?

Take lessons with one of our golf professionals and when the pro thinks you are ready, and you have passed the rules exam, he will apply for course permission. From now on, you may play (practice) rounds on our course, unaccompanied. If you manage to average no more than three extra strokes (than par) over a hole, you will prove you have the level of handicap 54. Have the scorecard signed by your marker (fellow player who at least has course permission and has passed his/her rules exam) and hand it in at your club. You can also enter your first scorecard via the app GOLF.nl. The secretariat will request a handicap pass from the NGF and from now on you can play on other golf courses.

6. How long does it take to obtain handicap 54 (the former GVB)?

Golf is difficult, but there are golf academies that offer handicap 54 in a weekend or even a day. The advantage is that you can then quickly play golf on all kinds of courses, the disadvantage is that you miss basic technique and probably do not have the level of handicap 54 and may drop out because you have little fun. As an indication: to reach handicap 54, you need about 10 lessons and 30 practice hours on average. Of course, this varies from person to person!

7. How expensive is a handicap 54 registration?

A registration membership at De Peelse Golf costs € 49,- p.j. (rate 2025). These are annual costs.

8. Is the golf rules exam difficult?

Not really. The golf rules exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions (10 etiquette questions, 19 rules questions and 1 stableford question) that take a maximum of 60 minutes. You pass when you get 23 questions right. Read more about the golf rules.

9. What golf equipment do I need when I first start playing golf?

None, when you play under the guidance of one of our golf professionals. The pro always has golf clubs to borrow. When practising on your own, you can rent a golf set at the reception desk for €10 (book in advance). It is wise to buy your own clubs only when you have had a few lessons and know that you want to continue with golf. Be sure to ask your golf teacher for advice when buying clubs!

10. What clothes can I wear when I play golf?

Neat, sporty clothes that are comfortable and in which you can turn well. Sport shoes or sneakers will do in the beginning. As you go out on the course more often, you will find that golf shoes come in handy (e.g. for grip on wet grass).

11. What is the minimum equipment I need when I want to continue playing golf?

When you look at the golf rules, there should be a maximum of 14 golf clubs in your bag. Most golfers, especially beginners, need far fewer clubs. Half a set of clubs (driver, hybrid, iron-7, pitching wedge, sandwedge, putter) is more than enough in the beginning. Of course, you need a golf bag and golf shoes are handy. Golf sets can be as expensive as you want. Golf and sports shops sell relatively cheap beginner's sets with 7 clubs and golf bags. Golf shoes also come in all price ranges. Golf balls come in all shapes and sizes. An expensive golf ball costs about €5 but when you are a beginner, it is better to start with cheap golf balls. Google on cheap golf balls and you will find plenty of cheaper options.

12. Where can I buy golf equipment?

Ask your golf teacher for advice on which clubs are best for you. Read more about golf clubs.
Search online for golf shops, there are plenty on offer.

13. I got my GVB a long time ago and always paid the annual NGF fee without having played golf. When I want to start again now, can I?

Yes. Nice that you are going to take up golf again! And you play from the handicap shown on your NGF card.

14. I got my handicap 54/GVB a long time ago and did not renew it at some point. Do I have to take the exam again?

No. You do need to re-register with your GolfServiceNumber. If you no longer have the GolfServiceNumber, you can request it from your last registered club (or from the NGF) with your surname and date of birth. You can then continue at De Peelse Golf from your last handicap.
